Regional Capacity Development Training on Climate-Induced Migration Commenced Today

ARBA-MINCH – July 27, 2026 (HoAREC&N) – A five-day intensive regional capacity development training on Climate-Induced Migration and the Nexus of Climate Change, Conflict, and mobility began today in Arba-Minch City, Ethiopia.

After welcoming expert participants from different eastern African countries, HoAREC Executive Director, prof. Mekuria Argaw emphasized that the capacity development training focuses on providing practical knowledge, tools for effective policy influence on climate change, conflict and mobility. He said that the training can also help enhance skills of participants for advocacy, policy engagement, mobilization skills of youth and representatives of civil society organization.

In the course of the training, resource persons drawn from different countries are expected to deliver presentations on various migration-related issues. On the first day session, Prof. Mekuria Argaw delivered presentations on climate-induced migration and the nexus of climate change, conflict, and human mobility including issues on migration in Africa – facts and figures for informed migration reporting and communications. His presentations covered, among other things, conceptual understanding of human mobility and climate change; understanding environmental change and climate nexus; climate-induced migration; policy and governance response.

The training was initiated by MECMEA project (Managing the Impacts of Environmental Change and Conflict on Mobility in Eastern Africa), financed by the European Union, contracted through the International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD) and implemented by regional consortium led by HoAREC&N.

The regional capacity development training involved the participation of over 35 people from East Africa Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda, Djibouti, Rwanda, Somalia, South Sudan and Tanzania. (HoAREC&N).

This National Capacity-Building activity is part of the MECMEA project (Managing the impacts of environmental change and conflict on mobility in Eastern Africa), led by Horn of Africa Regional Environment Centre and Network, with partners Mixed Migration Centre (MMC), PanAfricare Kenya, @Association Djibouti Nature, @South Sudan Nature Conservation, funded by the European Union and contracted by International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD) through the MMD Grant Facility.
