HoA-REN believes that better natural resource management and protection are urgently needed to prevent ecological collapse and a breakdown of the social fabric in many parts of the region. Through good environmental governance and management, the crises can be averted, enabling the Horn of Africa to benefit from a safer, healthier and more sustainable environment.
HoA-REN was established to promote cooperation and knowledge exchange between organisations with environmental expertise including Non-Governmental Organisations (NGO’s), Community Based Organisations, (CBO’s), research institutions and universities across Djibouti, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Kenya, Somalia, Sudan and South Sudan.
It seeks to harness, currently underutilised, environmental resources across the Horn of Africa region and facilitate, strengthen and advocate for initiatives relating to environmental conservation and natural resource management. This includes promoting sustainable energy and climate change adaptation and mitigation in the region.
HoA-REN links these initiatives to its various partners – international organisations, government bodies and private enterprises, in order to enhance environmental governance and management, contribute to sustainable development and improve livelihoods.
