The Sustainable Energy Program of HoA-REC&N was created to tackle the Horn of Africa’s heavy dependence on unsustainable biomass fuels, which account for over 90% of energy use in countries like Ethiopia. In rural areas, households rely on fuel wood, dung, charcoal, and kerosene for cooking and lighting — practices that cause deforestation, soil fertility loss, low crop yields, indoor air pollution, and health risks. Indoor smoke alone is linked to over 50,000 deaths annually in Ethiopia.

To address these challenges, the program promotes renewable energy solutions and energy-efficient technologies to improve household energy access, quality, and efficiency. It explores alternatives such as waste-to-energy systems, solar, and clean cooking technologies.

The program emphasizes long-term sustainability by adopting commercial approaches, building local value chains, providing training, engaging NGOs, CBOs, MFIs, and governments, and leveraging opportunities like carbon credit generation under the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM).

Through its projects, the Sustainable Energy Program has advanced clean energy access, reduced environmental pressure, improved livelihoods, and contributed to climate change mitigation in the Horn of Africa.
