Young and Seasoned Entrepreneurs Pitched at 3rd ECIC’s Competition

The 3rd Annual Pitch Competition organized by the Ethiopian Climate Innovation Centre (ECIC) entertained innovative projects of nine young and seasoned Ethiopian entrepreneurs.  Taking place at Desalegn International Hotel on 17 November 2016, the competition saw ideas ranging from using solar energy to run a water pump to recycling car tire tube rubber to design clothes.

As part of the competition, each contestant made a five-minute presentation on his/her innovation idea. After the presentation, each was given additional five minute to answer questions from the judges and the audience. The competition was evaluated by a panel of judges using pre-set criteria.

Mr. Sewalegn Mognnet won the first place with the innovative idea of using solar energy to pump water. He was awarded 5000 ETB. The second place went to Mr. Elias Negash, who presented the idea of producing mushrooms on areas covered by used coffee- and tea powder. Mr. Ashagre Tibebu was awarded the third place for using ethanol as energy for a stove.  The 2nd and 3rd place winners received 3000 ETB and 2000 ETB, respectively.

The fourth vote, which was the “people’s choice award” made by the audience, went to Ms.  Freshwoyen Endrias, who came up with the idea of recycling tire-tube rubber to design clothing and home accessories such as tables and chairs.The audience was comprised of bankers, micro-finance institution representatives, donors, government representatives, the business community and the media.
