MOMBASA, KENYA – February 25, 2026 (HoA-REC&N) – A Regional Capacity-Building Training on Evidence-Based, Inclusive Responses to Climate-Induced Migration has entered its third day with participants engaging in in-depth deliberation on international migration law, governance systems, and broader impact of migration on development.
The sessions, on its third days focused on international migration law, including relevant national legal frameworks, and dealt with how human rights principles can be integrated into migration management. The first day’s session focused on climate-induced migration and the nexus of climate change, conflict, and human mobility and migration in Africa – facts and figures for informed migration communication. The general discussions emphasized inclusivity, empowerment of marginalized groups, cultural sensitivity, and ethical consideration in addressing migration issues.
Participants explored migration governance systems under the theme, “Navigating the Migration Ecosystems in Africa”. Here the resource person provided insights into how migration is managed, highlighting coordination mechanisms, policy frameworks, and institutional roles across the sub-region.
Training participants critically reflected on both the opportunities and challenges linked to migration. Issues raised on the occasion were human trafficking, human smuggling, brain drain, and the major drivers of migration in East Africa. Economic, political, social, environmental and technical were mentioned as the major factors.
Participants representing diverse professional backgrounds, from eight East African countries, shared ideas, experiences, and suggestions to strengthen migration governance and protection systems.
The sessions were highly interactive with participants, numbering 40, divided in to groups to discuss assigned topics and present findings.
The Training, jointly organized by the Horn of Africa Regional Environment Center and Network at Addis Ababa University (HoA-REC&N-AAU) and PanAfricare-Kenya, will continue until the coming Friday with further discussion expected on practical approaches to improving migration management, legacy media and reporting on migration in Africa and policy implementation in the sub-region.
The Capacity-Building Training, as initiative of the MECMEA project that is financed by the European Union and Contracted by ICMPD, aims at strengthening community resilience and empowering youth, women, civil society organizations, community representatives and the media to be pioneers of change and forward looking catalysts to bring change on climate –induced migration in the continent.
