Overview

The Horn of Africa Energy Efficient Technology Distribution Programme of Activity (HoA-EETD-PoA) is a regional carbon finance initiative operating across Ethiopia, Kenya, Sudan, South Sudan, Djibouti, Eritrea, and Somalia.

The Programme is currently in the process of registration under the Gold Standard Registry, aiming to promote and support energy-efficient projects that bring social, economic, and environmental benefits across the region.

Programme Host & Developer

The Central Managing Entity (CME) of the programme is:

Horn of Africa Regional Environment Centre and Network (HoA-REC&N)
Addis Ababa University (AAU)

HoA-REC&N-AAU acts as the project developer, supporting project owners to register activities and generate carbon finance.

Key Features of the Programme

• 🔹 Supports energy-efficient cooking technologies to replace traditional three-stone open fire stoves.
• 🔹 Reduces greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions across the region.
• 🔹 Promotes economic, social, and environmental sustainability.
• 🔹 Over 42 implementing partners in the Horn of Africa region.
• 🔹 Includes Voluntary Project Activities (VPAs) from Ethiopia and Kenya.
• 🔹 VPAs implemented in partnership with coffee farmer unions.

Main Objectives

✅ Reduce fuelwood consumption and combat deforestation
✅ Lower indoor air pollution, benefiting women and children
✅ Reduce physical burdens on women and girls, freeing time for education and productive work
✅ Improve maternal health and household sanitation
✅ Issue carbon credits and generate sustainable carbon finance
