NBP-Ethiopia holds second quarterly performance review meeting of 2025
BISHOFTU – July 29, 2025 (HoAREC&N) – The National Biodiversity Platform Ethiopia (NBP-E) held its 2025 second-quarterly review meeting on July 26, 2025, where a detailed performance of the platform was presented and deliberated on by meeting participants.
Welcoming the meeting participants, the General Director of the Ethiopian Biodiversity Institute (EBI) and chairman of the platform, Dr. Karta Kaske said that the NBP-Ethiopia has a pivotal role in conserving the country’s biodiversity through bringing together the science community, indigenous knowledge holders, and policymakers for betterment of biodiversity conservation and Ecosystem services improvement. Dr. Karta further acknowledged the Executive Committee and the three subcommittees members of the platform for their valuable contributions and efforts in shaping the platform.
The Deputy Director-General of EBI and the secretary of the platform, Dr. Abiyot Birhanu, presented the second-quarter report in detail, discussed the challenges faced during the performance period, and presented at length the plan for the remaining two quarters. Dr. Abiyot also highlighted the importance of strong engagement throughout the meeting of the EC and the sub-committee members, as well as the stakeholders, to effectively meet the goals of the NBP and improve the platform’s initiatives moving forward. He further remarked on the need for bringing forward the overlooked stakeholders on board while reviewing the existing stakeholders map and replacing less committed sub-committee members by active ones.
Participants discussed the achievements made and challenges encountered in the course of implementing the quarterly performance plan. Participants deliberated on the importance of collaboration among the federal and regional sector organizations, as well as other partners of the platform to effectively address the challenges of Ethiopia’s unique biodiversity.
Regarding the role of the NBP-E in implementing the National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plan (NBSAP) 2025-2030, the participants agreed to come up with concrete and clear roles that should be played by NBP.
Furthermore, the participants emphasized the need for working proactively in mobilizing resources to enhance achieving the targets set by the platform. They also agreed to establish more frequent communication to ensure that all stakeholders remain aligned and proactive in their initiatives.
The meeting, held in Bishoftu Town, was attended by all NBP-EC members, and representatives of the three sub-committees namely the Multidisciplinary Expert, Resource Mobilization and Capacity Development, as well as Local Knowledge Promotion and Integration Sub-committees. (HoAREC&N).
