HORN OF AFRICA ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY AND RESILIENCE (HoA-ESR) Project (2019-2023)

The Horn of Africa Environmental Sustainability and Resilience project (HoA-ESR)is the Horn of Africa Regional Environment Centre and Network (HoA-REC&N) flagship regional initiative that integrates all the six countries in the Horn of Africa, including Djibouti, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Kenya, Somalia (Somaliland), and South Sudan. This Project is funded by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA).

The project is designed to strengthen the biodiversity portfolio across trans-boundary ecosystems and biodiversity hotspots in the selected countries in the Horn region, supporting the countries in their commitments to combating biodiversity loss and environmental degradation, promoting sustainable management of Natural Resources, and grassroots peace and security.

Goal of the project

The goal of the project is to enhance environmental sustainability and resilience through research, knowledge-based policy and development as a pathway to promoting sustainable natural resources management, conservation of biodiversity and regional integration, peace and stability in the Horn countries.

Thematic Components of the Project

The project has five major thematic components:

  • Landscape restoration, resilience and sustainable natural resources management,
  • Food security and community resilience;
  • Energy security, energy-efficient technology development and promotion;
  • Demand-driven action research (knowledge co-generation and use) for capacity building, evidence-based policy dialogue and decision making;
  • Public-Private Partnerships engagement for landscape restoration and resilience building
