TERI–HoA-REC&N Clean Energy Project in Ethiopia
“Empowering Households with Clean, Affordable Energy Solutions“
The TERI–HoA-REC&N Project is a collaborative initiative aimed at providing affordable, sustainable, and market-based clean energy solutions—including solar lighting and improved cookstoves—to poor households in Ethiopia.
Launched in September 2013, this project is a partnership between:
- The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI)
- Horn of Africa Regional Environment Centre and Network (HoA-REC&N)
- Funded by the UK Department for International Development (DFID)
Project Implementation Areas
The project was rolled out in several regions of Ethiopia, including:

–Oromia Region: Arsi Negelle, Ziway, Shashemene
–SNNPR Region: Butajira
–Addis Ababa: Kolfe Keranio peri-urban areas
Impact and Reach
Through the TERI–HoA-REC&N Clean Energy Project:
- 1,295 households adopted improved cookstoves
- 8,797 households gained access to solar lighting
- Over 60,475 people benefitted from modern, clean energy access
Technology Disseminated
Building Sustainable Supply Chains
To ensure long-term impact, the project focused on developing local energy supply chains by:
- Partnering with local solar enterprises
- Collaborating with stove producers
- Engaging renewable energy retailers and women cooperatives at the grassroots level
Conclusion
This initiative demonstrates a successful model of delivering clean energy solutions in a sustainable and market-driven way, positively impacting thousands of lives and promoting environmental health across Ethiopia.
