Human impact together with changing climate is significantly affecting natural resources in the Ziway Sub-Basin. Located in the Central Rift Valley of Ethiopia, this is a closed sub-basin that is highly sensitive to natural and human impacts. Despite this sensitivity, there is a high level of unregulated water abstraction and pollution by smallholder farmers and investors putting pressure on ecosystems and biodiversity around the area.

Understanding the challenges posed to water resources in the sub-basin, this project aims to develop and pilot a socially equitable and economically viable water allocation plan that also recognises ecosystem water flow requirements. In order for the water allocation plan to be effective, it must be accepted and implemented by relevant government offices and the wider community. In this regard the Horn of Africa Regional Environment Centre & Network (HoA-REC&N), Ministry of Water, Irrigation and Energy (MoWIE) will work together with the Rift Valley Lakes Basin Authority and Oromia Regional State to make this a reality. The French Embassy in Ethiopia is funding the Water Allocation Plan Development Project.
