The Centre for Development Innovation, Wageningen UR (CDI-WUR) in partnership with HoA-REC&N has been supporting the Horn Africa Climate Change Programme through the implementation of the programme’s component related to capacity development. The event, popularly known as the Landscape Learning Journey in the Horn of Africa will be the fifth since the start of the training event in 2015. The learning trajectory is implemented twice in a year organised to rotate across all the implementing countries in the Horn. This time the capacity development event is organised to take place in Djibouti. The two organisations will jointly hold the Regional Capacity building event in Djibouti from 30th Oct to 3rd November 2017 under the theme: Climate Change Adaptation and Landscape Governance.

The Landscape Learning Journey aims to strengthen key stakeholders’ capacity to enhance their knowledge on landscape governance and climate resilience livelihood strategy, providing tools for landscape analysis, and a platform for learning and exchange. Through this component of the HoA-CCP, the capacity of stakeholders are built to engage in landscape level dialogues, and empower them to address critical issues in a multi-stakeholder setting that works toward building climate resilience.

The learning brings together practitioners from the six landscapes of the HoA-CCP.  The programme promotes climate smart sustainable and inclusive development in Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia/Somaliland, Sudan and South Sudan. It works through an integrated approach, focusing on land, water, value chains and renewable energy and green infrastructure development to enhance climate change adaptation and mitigation, and create ‘resilient landscapes’. The HoA-CCP is implemented in strategic parts of (trans-boundary) river basins in the Horn of Africa. The programme uses an area-based approach to promote sustainable development and climate resilience.
The program focus areas include:

  • Promotion of landscape restoration through sustainable land and water management and natural resource conservation;
  • Increased food security by promoting climate smart agriculture and green value chains;
  • Reduction of green house gas emissions and improvement of livelihoods by promoting renewable energy and green infrastructure.

This is the fifth of these series of the learning events. The hosting institution is Association of Djibouti Nature (ADN), the implementing Focal Point Organization of the HoA-CCP.  The learning will focus on Assamo Mountains Landscape situated in the region of Al-Sabieh, Djibouti. This is a learning case, which will demonstrate an important environmental history related to the transition from pastoralism to agro-pastoralism as an adaptation strategy. The detailed agenda for the four days is as enclosed.
