Background

The National Biodiversity Platform (NBP-Ethiopia) which has been operational since May 2022 aims to strengthen the science-policy-action interface through enhanced engagement of the policy/decision makers, the scientific community and actors with respect to the conservation of Ethiopia’s biological resources, maintenance of ecosystem services and equitable sharing of benefits arising from the use of genetic resources. In line with this, the NBP-Ethiopia is supposed to serve as a forum that connects diverse stakeholders, i.e. policy makers, the scientific community, civil society, the private sector and local communities, which have concerns for and role in the protection of the environment, in the conservation of biodiversity and the maintenance of ecosystem services. Furthermore, it facilitates communication between policy makers and the scientific community thereby fostering promoting problem solving oriented research and also the uptake of policy relevant scientific evidence. The Platform’s missions are creating space for policymakers, scientists, and practitioners to jointly design and implement transformative biodiversity and ecosystem services related undertakings; facilitating synergy among multi-stakeholders vis-à-vis efforts targeting conservation outcomes; promoting the generation of biodiversity-related data and also the recognition and integration of local community knowledge; and influencing the formulation of biodiversity-related policies, strategies, and other relevant legal frameworks as well as the putting in place of appropriate institutional structures. To ensure the proper functioning of the NBP-Ethiopia and thereby accomplish the above mentioned missions, hiring a Coordinating Officer who reports to the National IPBES Focal Point is required.

Duties and Responsibilities

Besides additional duties and responsibilities that may be assigned by the IPBES National Focal Point, the Coordinating Officer is suppose to deliver the following tasks:

  • Coordinate the implementation of the NBP-Ethiopia’s (the Executive Committee’s) Annual Action Plan;
  • Undertake communication activities in line with the formal operation the Platform;
  • Organize all necessary documents and other archives that related to the Platform;
  • Support and follow up resource mobilization processes that aim at soliciting funds;
  • Plan and organize evets like workshops, panel discussions, fairs, regular meetings etc. in line with activity plans of the Executive Committee and the subcommittee;
  • Record minutes of meetings and communicate as appropriate;
  • Formulate quarterly and annual plans as well as that of other major activities;
  • Execute tasks related to evet organization such as issuing invitations and logistic arrangements;
  • Regularly monitor the progress in the implementation of the NBP-Ethiopia Annual Plan;
  • Compile lesson learned and facilitate experience sharing processes;

  • Computer proficiency, especially related to professional office software packages (Microsoft Office).

Required Skills and Experience
Education and Experience

  • A minimum of MSc Degree or equivalent in Biodiversity Conservation, Natural Resource Management, Environmental Science or related fields;
  • At least 5 years and above work experience in academic or conservation-oriented institutions;
  • Publication/s in reputable journals
  • Recommendation letter (optional)

Language skill

  • Acceptable level of mastery of English language (both in spoken and written forms)

Terms of employment

  • Gross Salary: 15,000 Ethiopian Birr per month
  • Mode of employment: contract
  • Duration: One year (renewable)
