Cso Consultation Session by Mahlet Tadesse On May 12, 2010, Forum for Environment, Secretariat of the Ethiopian Civil Society Network on Climate Change (ECSNCC) organized a half day consultation meeting with ECNSCC members to discuss on the recent developments in the country concerning climate change, specifically the Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions (NAMA), Program of Adaptation for Climate Change and Carbon Neutral Climate Resilient – Ethiopia (CNCR-E) program.These initiatives were presented by a representative from Federal Environmental Protection Authority - Mr. Wondwossen Sintayehu, he started by explaining the National Adaptation Program of Action (NAPA), it has been an instrument to identify and communicate immediate and urgent adaptation activities that address current and anticipated adverse effects of climate change. Regarding the NAMA that was submitted to UNFCCC on 29th January 2010 by the EPA as per the Copenhagen Accord; Wondwossen gave details saying that the NAMA has seven thematic areas that identifies concrete actions. He then continued to elaborate on the draft National Adaptation Program and its finalization process whereby different levels of administration to the lowest level will have the chance to elaborate it through workshops to be carried out in the coming months. Lastly he talked about the significance of CNCR-E to create a national capacity to mobilize and obtain funds to transfer environmentally friendly technologies for the implementation of CNCR economy by the year 2025. Participants suggested for government to articulate the civil society contribution towards the Adaptation Programme to ensure participation as well as emphasizing the need to incorporate climate change issues in the next generation of PASDEP. In addition participants pleaded to the Ethiopian government to focus on mobilizing funds for implementation of these projects. Click the attachment to view the whole news letter. |
